To get to the remote dunes of Erg Chegaga, you have to cross the Atlas Mountains, old kasbahs, and huge desert landscapes. The itinerary:

DAY 1: MARRAKECH – HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS – AIT BEN HADDOU – OUARZAZATE – DADES VALLEY

You can be picked up at 07:00 from your Riad or any other place you choose. Cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m) in the High Atlas Mountains and enjoy the views of the Berber villages. Get to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This fortified ksar is known for its beautiful Kasbahs and for being in films. Take a guided walk, cross the river, and climb to the top for stunning views of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains and the Ounila Valley.

After lunch, head to Ouarzazate, Morocco’s “Hollywood,” where you can choose to visit the film studios. Continue through Skoura and the Valley of Roses (which is only open in late May) to Dades Valley. At sunset, go to the Dades Gorges and see the strange rock formations like “Monkey Fingers.”

DAY 2: DADES VALLEY – TODRA GORGE – ERFOUD – RISANI – MERZOUGA (270 km)

After breakfast, drive along the “1000 Kasbahs Road,” which goes through colourful Berber villages to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls are 300 metres high and great for hiking. Keep going towards Erfoud and Rissani, stopping for lunch in Tinjdad or Touroug. Get to the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga, and then drive a short distance off-road to meet the camels. Ride a camel over the golden dunes to get to the desert camp. Welcome tea and check-in to private tents that are comfortable and have their own bathrooms.

DAY 3: MERZOUGA – ZIZ VALLEY – MIDDLE ATLAS – IFRANE – FES

Get up early to see the sun rise over the dunes, then ride a camel back to camp for breakfast. Head towards Ziz Valley to see Morocco’s second largest palm date from all sides.

Go on to Midelt for lunch, then through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Quick stop in cedar forests to see Barbary Apes. Take a break for coffee in Ifrane, which is called “The Switzerland of Morocco.”

Continue to Fes, where the tour concludes in the evening.
